Heart Risks of Untreated Sleep Apnea | The Relationship Between Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease

The findings strengthened the belief that the unexpected death due to heart failure is notably linked with the existence and intensity of sleep apnea.

More than 12 M USA citizens are suspected to have sleep apnea, which is a potential sleep breathing disorder. In sleep apnea, breathing is stopped for 10 or more seconds several times in every hour of night time sleep.

These irregular heart beatings are controlled by an electro-physiologist, who is also a cardiologist.

Dr. Apoor Gami – an electro-physiologist and his associates had discovered in their previous study that sleep apnea sufferers who died due to sudden heart attach were at nighttime, which was absolutely opposing factor discovered in patients dying from sudden heart failure who had no sleep apnea. The risk of unexpected heart-related death increases eighty folds when the oxygen diffusion level is seventy eight percent or lower. In a physically fit person, the oxygen diffusion level is 95-100 percent, which is normal.

He said that twenty occurrences of apnea every hour is considered as moderate apnea.

However, Apoor is not able to describe the relation with surety as he just discovered an association but not a cause and effect connection between unexpected heart-related mortality and sleep apnea. He said that there can be a number of probable descriptions such as unexpected heart-related death can be caused by the heart disease that is related to sleep apnea.

The above findings were reviewed by an electro-physiologist, Dr. Neil Sanghvi and he warned the sleep apnea patients to take these findings seriously.

Mostly sleep apnea patients are overweight, but not always and lots of them also suffer from heart related diseases. These complications already put the sleep apnea patients under the risk of unexpected heart-related death. Dr. Neil elaborated that such complications increases the risk level and along with sleep apnea, they can bring about the worst results.

Neil further said that any person, who supposes to having sleep apnea, must consult a therapist for a sleep apnea examination. Exhaustion and drowsiness feelings during daytime are the regular indications. Another hint is a bed associate, who nags about your snoring.

Dr. Apoor said that though it was not targeted in the study to see if the use of CPAP reduces the risk, however, it would be safe to conclude that it would.
